Snow-capped mountains, long stretches of golden sand and ancient forests alive with butterflies; the United Kingdom offers so much more than bleak weather and roast dinners. With such inspiring landscapes right on our front door and a planet in the depths of a climate emergency, this month we ask; is international travel really a necessity?
As travellers grow more curious and considerate towards their impact on the environment, here we champion the slow staycation. Dip your feet into sparkling lakes, climb over cloud-scraping peaks and embrace this small but mighty island for what it really is.

It was summer 1986, in the heart of Rome’s Piazza di Spagna, when the ‘slow’ movement began. McDonald's had opened its first restaurant in Italy, planting its golden arches near the famous Spanish Steps. The response? Protesting politicians, loud Italian singers and deep iron skillets of spaghetti served up to the thousands of demonstrators, all campaigning to preserve regional cuisine and local traditions.
This month we revel in the latest manifestation of the trend; the art of slow travel, of stopping to savour what’s close by. Our latest journal entry takes you on a journey through Britain’s most breathtaking national parks, across barren moorland and along sweeping coastlines, in search of a real connectivity to the natural world.
