Galleon
Portreath, Cornwall, UK
A topsy-turvy beach house high on a cliff above Portreath Beach, Galleon is wrapped up in sky and sea. With eyes trained on the waves, let long, lazy days take their course here; wander down the lane to the sand, where tidal pools, shell hunting and dam building set the agenda for a classic day on Cornwall's north coast. Fear not for winter days, for an indoor pool, and wraparound conservatory ensure luxurious R&R all year-round.
Introduction
From humble seaside chalet to hand-crafted beach house carved into the cliffs, Galleon has been lovingly rebuilt by two generations of the same family. Blending mid-century furnishings with treasured family heirlooms, and hand-painted seascapes, families will feel at ease at this luxury home-on-high. Beyond the beach, North Cornwall's treasures spread out in both directions; Gwithian, and St Ives to the South, Porthtowan, St Agnes, and Perranporth to the north.
Inside
Making the most of the far-reaching sea views, and with glass facing in all directions, one is in prime position for watching the weather rush across the Atlantic. In summer, spot rays bursting from clouds to land on the sparkling ocean from the chequered terrace, or rain rush darkness across the village from the open-plan living area in cooler months. Polished mid-century wooden furnishings glint as sunset pours through the windows, Galleon's nostalgic feel as warm and comforting as the day's first mug of tea.
Outside
Beyond Galleon's patios and balconies designed with al fresco living in mind, Portreath is often missed from the regular tourist tramp; although the beach is very popular with locals. All the ingredients for a day at the seaside can be found here, while further around the coast path, in both directions, there are secret coves at the ends of waterfalls, and quiet, butterfly-filled valleys. By night, drink in the sun as it sinks into the sea from the lower deck, or frequent any of the busy community inns.

From the owner
“Throughout the property you will see my late father´s love of wood, sea and sailing; most of the wooden items were made by him. The position of the house is perfect for storm watching, safe from the huge waves! Sunset and sunrise are my favourite parts of the day, best enjoyed with a cup of coffee.”
The house was built by my late father and his passion for building, wood, the sea and boats is seen throughout the property. Most of the wood features are handcrafted by my father who was a highly skilled carpenter and also built wooden sailing boats – his real passion.
Galleon was lovingly built as a retirement home for my parents, but unfortunately, we lost my father unexpectedly in 2014. When my mother’s health deteriorated, I arranged for her to live with me; however, we have so much love for the property that we couldn't sell my father’s family dream. Even though it was sad that we could no longer use Galleon as our main family home, we wanted it to be enjoyed by others.
All of the beautiful wooden sleigh beds were built and designed by my father. The cleats which can be found throughout the property used for holding up the blinds were also made by him as part of his wooden boat building projects, as well as the plans of wooden boats displayed throughout the house.
My father's photo can be found in front of you when you enter, to greet you to our family home that he worked so hard to achieve. A hugely talented man - which we hope you will agree.

Beautiful property, views were great and it had everything we needed. The kitchen was more well equipped than my own at home! Our boys loved the pool and even with 2 small children, it was relaxing. Portreath had a charm to it, not too touristy, and had enough amenities to make things easy for us day to day.
Thank you so much for the most perfect spot to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed all the gems of the house - Especially the newly installed pool, which we absolutely loved. Sunsets to die for, outstanding views, luxurious interior, amazing pool, never-ending opportunities for lovely walks - Overall an experience we will never forget.
Thank you for such a wonderful stay in your beautiful home! We enjoyed daily stunning sunsets, incredible views, long walks on the coastal path, and our little boy loved our daily ritual of beach and ice cream! The fish and chips at the Atlantic were delicious, the pasties from the bakers expanded our waistlines, and an evening coffee to watch the sun go down every night was pure bliss. We love the decor and furniture, and hope to be back next year!
Thank you so much for the most wonderful stay in such a beautiful home! Waking up to the sound of the waves every day was a real treat, and that view! We love Cornwall, this is a very special place and has such a good energy. We did not want to leave! We will be back, thank you again.
What a wonderful place for our family get-together. The historian among us was thrilled to learn that Portreath was ´the capital of copper´ in the first half of the nineteenth century. We loved the waves rolling in, the intrepid surfers, the glorious sunset, and exploring many wonderful places like Tolgus Tin Mill, Mousehole, Falmouth, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Thank you for sharing your lovely home.
We managed to choose a rather wet and very windy week but the fabulous house and location still made for a great holiday. We splashed out on getting in Ox and Origin to do dinner for an anniversary/birthday and they were brilliant, cooking up Michelin star food. Lots of dog walking on the beach and round the cliffs. Thank you for the use of your lovely home!
Thank you so much for a lovely stay in such a beautiful home. The views are to die for and everything was so cosy. We will certainly recommend Galleon to our friends and hope to come back.
We have loved our week here in Portreath. The house has been built and fitted out with such care and attention to detail. The views were spectacular and, as others have said, constantly changing with the tides and weather. We enjoyed the Tate at St Ives and the wonderful beaches at Watergate Bay and Godrevy. Our little grandson spent hours building castles and canals on the beaches. Our final day brought glorious sunshine, making us feel very reluctant to leave!
We´re so sad to leave your family home and have fallen deeper in love with Cornwall and Galleon. Thank you for all your help and care and your warm welcome. God willing we will be back in 2019! We adore your home and your papa´s presence is clearly everywhere!
We all had the most wonderful stay in this beautiful house and have enjoyed the lovely sea views and many glowing sunsets. Thank you very much and we hope to be back soon!
We have had the most wonderful week here. The house is beautiful and the views are stunning! Really enjoyed evening walks on the beach with our dog and watching the sun go down! Thank you so much!
Thank you. We have had the most wonderful and relaxing holiday. We have thoroughly enjoyed staying in Galleon with its beautiful craftsmanship and spectacular views. The weather has been kind. We have enjoyed coastal walks, visited the Minack Theatre and good food at the Atlantic. We will miss this special place.
A beautiful house with a spectacular outlook. Loved all the wood and features in the house, the rope and pulley system on the blinds was very clever. The quality of the accommodation was superb. We´ve had a great week - been lucky with the weather and been on some fab walks from the door North and South on the coastal path as well as from Sennen Cove to Lands End. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely home.
There is only one way to put it, this house is amazing. We have had such an unforgettable experience here in Portreath and I would like to thank you so much for lending us your house. Hopefully we will be back next year.
A short note to say a very big thank you for lending us your beautiful home for our special introduction to Cornwall. We have loved every moment in this incredible place. What a spot you have here, so calm, so majestic, so raw, so natural. Your fathers spirit is so present, the love he put into every corner of the house is so evident and we feel very lucky to have had two weeks at Galleon. I truly hope that we can keep in touch and we will definitely be back. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Very much enjoyed our stay, fabulous views and very relaxing watching everyone else expand their energy on the beach. Coast walk not for the faint hearted but worth the views! Stunning house. Thank you for sharing.
We had such a wonderful time staying in your beautiful home. The house is full of love and extremely comfortable, you are justifiably proud of your father´s skills. Our favourite place was Kynance Cove and for food Porthminster Kitchen in St Ives. We hope to return one day. Many thanks.
Thank you for a lovely week at Galleon. We have explored parts of this rugged coastline with our children and dogs. Porthleven and St Ives are worth a visit, though hit the road early to avoid the crowds. The dogs loved the beach after seven and Tehidy Woods just up the road. A beautiful house, with stunning views.
Had an excellent time and the property was wonderful. The views were incredible and the house was more than they could have wished for.
Views were lovely! Property was lovely. The road down to the property was quite tight but would highly recommend it to friends and family, we all had a fantasic week.
The photos don´t do it justice! This is a beautiful home, every corner is filled with love. Every part of the house is comfortable - and the geothermal underfloor heating meant there were no drafts at all! We love every part of it. Nikki was really lovely and even left me a birthday present, which was a very lovely touch.
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us. We have had the best time and hate to have to leave. Falling asleep each night to the sound of the sea and waking up each morning to an incredible view has been amazing. We´ve loved sitting in the conservatory at night with a glass of wine, stargazing and reminiscing. The location was perfect for us and we have enjoyed walking into the village each day for lunch or to grab a coffee at the Atlantic. We have fallen in love with Galleon and we can´t wait to return in the near future.
We have loved our stay in your beautiful house. Fabulous views and great walks for the dogs just down the lane. We were so lucky to see dolphins on our walk around the headland. We’re so sad to be leaving.
What a fabulous house! We loved the views, the beach and watching the seagulls flying toward the sunset to roost every evening. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us!
What a quality home with stunning views! Constantly changing and a dramatic picture from every window. Location to the beach, coastal walks and village are an absolute bonus. Going to sleep and waking up to the sound of the sea a delight. Thank you for our holiday.
What a view to wake up to each morning and a beautiful place to watch the sunset over the sea. Thank you for a very enjoyable holiday.
