Fjall
Fishpond, Lyme Regis, Dorset, UK
Settled on the hillside of a wooded valley near Lyme Regis, and influenced by foreign principles of simple living, Fjall brings together the very best of the world beneath its raw, exposed timbers. With faded pink plaster walls and swirling concrete floors flowing from room to room, this luxury self-catering retreat with views of Charmouth and the Jurassic Coast would be as comfortable amongst Morocco’s vibrant riads as it is in rural Dorset.
Introduction
Conceived by a textile artist and inspired by the principles of Japanese Wabi Sabi, here is a home where age is honoured and flaws celebrated; repurposed flint from the site’s original dwelling (captured forever in Lucien Piassarro’s painting of Fishpond, High View) makes up the front wall of Fjall, while inside the natural patterns of plaster and wood are proudly showcased throughout. Designed to be a restful escape framing the climatic valley views towards the coast, this luxury self-catering retreat is a unique hideaway which will ground and inspire all who reside within.
Inside
Revealing the bones in its structure, the beauty of this Dorset dwelling lies in its timeless honesty. Antique Indian furniture sits beside mid-century Ercol, balancing the span of time while keeping stories alive and giving them new life. Time is easily spent in this harmonious dwelling and, with the double-height lounge and hallway letting those extensive views stream in, one could easily feel as though they’re floating above the trees over a morning coffee. Earthen tones, unique artworks and handwoven textiles designed by the owner complete Fjall’s uncomplicated aesthetic.
Outside
Set high in a woodland overlooking Charmouth and the Jurassic coast, the south-facing deck is a difficult place to prise away from. Accessed through sliding doors from the lounge, step into the sun as it rises across the horizon, before a family breakfast of buttered crumpets and sweet Dorset jam on the al fresco dining table. For those in search of solitude, a small garden set within a private clearing up the lane offers quiet contemplation with a bench overlooking the valley and sea. For those in search of sandy toes and ice creams, the seaside town and beach of Lyme Regis is just a short drive away.

From the owner
“Fjall is all about visual connection to the outside. Below to the south lie Charmouth and the Jurassic Coast, behind is the ancient hill fort of Lambert´s Castle. The view is ever-changing, the sea can be anything from silver-grey to a deep blue depending on the time of day and weather.”
We completed the house in 2021, on the site of an old ramshackle building dating from the 19th century. We were careful to respect the original dimensions from the road, partly to retain the lines captured in one of a series of paintings of Fishpond by Lucien Pissarro dating from 1915.
The rebuild was a major undertaking for us, we wanted to build an entirely modern property on the site while retaining a sense of the original stone, as seen in the external wall for example. Inside, we wanted to use tactile and pleasing materials with a focus on simplicity, hence the plaster walls and micro-crete floor.
Throughout we have used modern materials and design inspired by Wabi-Sabi principles, including handmade tiles in the bathrooms, an energy efficient woodburner and fluid spaces for work and creativity. Our favourite place in the house and gardens (and there are many!) has to be the wicker swing chair on the porch, it is such a lovely, secluded corner with the most magnificent view. In the mornings, the stairwell is filled with a magical light which falls on the raw pink walls and antique wooden panel, bringing us joy every time we stay here.

Thank you so much for a spectacular stay at Fjall, even the English weather couldn´t put a dampener on our time here. Everything is so beautiful and welcoming. Thank you for all the recommendations; we packed in as much as we could during our stay!
What a wonderful place with so much love and thought put into every touch! This was exactly what we needed; to unwind from a very eventful season past. Evenings watching the sunset, mornings in ´the spaceship´ and comfort everywhere. Our stay at Fjall has been a treasure to remember. We look forward to returning!
Fjall is the very first property we have stayed at with Unique Homestays and from this stay, we have been thoroughly blown away by the attention to detail of every decoration, accessory and equipment provided. We loved the architecture and interior design! Truly a 5-star experience. We are convinced that Unique Homestays have taken holidays to a whole new level and will definitely be looking to stay at another Unique Homestays property.
Fjall is stunning. Being in such a beautiful space, with so many thoughtful touches was a real treat. I loved every second of the stay here. Returning home was a depressing affair, and that´s the first time I´ve ever felt that strongly! It is such a special place, we will most certainly be back.
Beautifully decorated, in a very peaceful setting and the house had everything we could ever need. The decor is just fantastic, including the beautifully designed and luxurious blankets! We had no idea how close we would be to such stunning beaches, fantastic coastal views plus the abundance of foodie places in nearby beach towns. Fjall is an oasis of calm with nothing but birdsong each morning and amazing views overlooking the hills out to sea. Thank you.
