Luxury self-catering accommodation in Mousehole
A tangle of fishermen’s cottages, winding alleyways, and a tiny harbour with bobbing boats; add a scoop of ice cream and this is a classic Cornish idyll.
Way down west on Cornwall's sweet south coast in Mousehole (pronounced Mowzel), fishermen have combed the local waters for hundreds of years and the village retains a busy, buzzing feel. There's a perfect arc of tiny cottages around the front, protected by an old harbour wall that's built up even more in winter when the thundering waves roll in. Down the crooked lanes and back alleys, quirky shops, galleries and tea rooms offer opportunities for dawdling guests.
For a small town, Mousehole has much to its name. ‘Stargazy’ pilchard pie (heads and tails poking out of the crust); the well-known children’s tale The Mousehole Cat; and a dazzling Christmas lights display, in which the entire harbour is lit up like a huge glittering tree and reflections dance on the waters. Even poet Dylan Thomas described it as ’the loveliest village in England’, and more than most agree. Take a cosy window seat in one of the quaint pubs and watch the world go by.
