Artemis | Luxury Self-Catering Country House | Alresford, Hampshire

Artemis

Alresford, Hampshire, UK

In the undulating folds of the South Downs, near the market town of Alresford, Artemis stands as a Victorian rebel, its walls poured from liquid stone in an age enamoured with brick. This luxury country house with a pool is a labyrinthine cabinet of curiosities, its striking stature softened by the gentle rustle of meadow grass in glorious Jane Austen Country.

Book

Introduction

Artemis emerges as an enigma, its white facade concealing an innovative spirit. The estate, set within nearly six acres of Hampshire countryside, bridges history and contemporary living with considered grace. Natural materials harmonise with curated art collections and bespoke furniture, thoughtfully sourced from the owners' creative circle, while the gardens unfold as a series of outdoor rooms. From meticulously sculpted topiaries to swaying seas of wildflowers, each space tells a story, with the South Downs National Park offering a mesmeric backdrop. The nearby town of Alresford provides a taste of local life, where chalk-stream trout and local wines sing of the region’s rich terroir.

Inside

Part gallery, part family sanctuary, this home delights in contrasts—tactile journeys of marble, cowhide, and bouclé, with hand-blown glass casting shape-shifting patterns on curio-adorned walls. Staffordshire Blue tiles and oak floorboards tell tales of countless steps in their aged patina; in the kitchen, Derbyshire fossil countertops reveal aeons of time. Bannisters smoothed by generations of trailing hands lead to bedrooms of dawn-mist tones and riotous florals, while cabin bunks call to little adventurers. Bathrooms blend Victorian grandeur with playful modernity, and a fully-equipped annexe provides extra space. Come eve, retreat to a sitting room or cosy nook, led by the soft glow of sconces.

Outside

Perched on a valley's edge, Artemis surveys the countryside. French doors open onto a terrace where wild grasses frame impromptu croquet matches and languid picnics that stretch from noon to dusk, when the firepit beckons. The velvety lawn invites both leisure and play, while an orchard cradles a reflective pool. A hidden trampoline offers flights of fancy; the kitchen garden overflows with "help yourself" herbs, vegetables, and flowers. The estate is alive with movement—pheasants strut across the lawn, muntjac deer slip through glades. As night falls, the Dark Sky Reserve above unveils a celestial spectacle, drawing the day to a close with a cosmos untouched by artificial glare.

From the owner

“In the heart of the South Downs, Artemis blends Victorian grandeur with modern comfort. From its concrete bones to its lush meadows, it offers a unique retreat where history and nature intertwine. It´s the perfect sanctuary for both family gatherings and peaceful escapes.”

From the owner

Built by a member of the Baring family in the late 19th century, Artemis is one of the few privately owned houses on the Grange Estate. Despite its traditional appearance, the main house is constructed from in-situ concrete. The property was thoughtfully extended in the early 2000s, including the addition of the timber-framed Studio annexe.

Over the years, we've lovingly refurbished the house using natural materials wherever possible. Our first project was planting a wildflower meadow, seamlessly connecting the garden to the breathtaking valley beyond. Situated within the South Downs National Park, the property boasts an abundance of wildlife. It's common to spot hares, rabbits, pheasants, partridges, muntjac deer, and owls.

The house offers a perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort, providing a unique retreat for those seeking to immerse themselves in the beauty of the South Downs. Whether you're exploring the surrounding countryside, trying out the local pubs, or simply relaxing in the garden, you'll find that Artemis offers a truly special experience.

We hope you'll cherish the tranquillity and natural beauty of this special place as much as we do.
