The Stack
Trelion, Cornwall, UK
The Stack lies within the secluded hamlet of Trelion, overlooking the upper reaches of the magnificent Fal Valley in mid-Cornwall. Offering a truly extraordinary escape complete with al fresco kitchen, this 19th century luxury self-catering engine house is sure to inspire those with a love for unique architecture and original interiors. An idyllic home for a family summer break with a difference, yet still fit for an out-of-season romantic hot tub retreat for couples seeking an alternative hideaway.
Introduction
Revealing a fascinating glimpse into its ancient mining heritage, The Stack sits at the end of a sweeping pathway deep within a rural idyll, binding a classically Cornish Grade-II listed exterior with rustic interiors. Showcasing the essence of the build and the setting in which it is ensconced, The Stack is a luxury self-catering engine house that straddles five floors, where each room is as cosy and inviting as the last. Yet, all the group will tumble into the beautiful gardens for al fresco kitchen feasts at any opportunity. From multi-generational family escapes to luxury weekenders with friends, this home balances historical architecture with the modernity of a basement cinema den.
Inside
Though frequently met with in the pages of the most whimsical library books, there are only a few places in the land where one can live inside a fairytale tower... and with indoor-outdoor living and a rather glamorous bathroom to boot. From the atmospheric movie den to the rustluxe country kitchen, The Stack could be the most photogenic dwelling in the country. In a partnership with heritage brand Toast, British purveyors of chic homeware and thoughtful living, the engine house boasts a suite that’s dressed head-to-toe in Bulgarian wool blankets sourced from the Rhodope Mountains, patchwork linen cushions, and earthen ceramics made by the hands of artisans. Call it a grown-ups' playhouse.
Outside
Set in over half an acre of gardens, The Stack occupies a secluded location overlooking the wooded upper reaches of the beautiful Fal Valley. Self-catering family groups can enjoy a Swallows and Amazons retreat as children bug hunt, leaf press, and tree climb, whilst the adults get creative in the rustic outdoor kitchen preparing olive oil-anointed salads and mixing Cornish cocktails. With uninterrupted views of the rolling patchwork countryside, you can be assured of complete privacy as you immerse yourself in the sunken hot tub as the sun sets. What's certain is this; with its beautiful gardens and fairytale aesthetic, The Stack is truly the most mesmerising of dog-friendly family escapes.

From the owner
“Such a special location, and a property that takes your breath away, The Stack captivated us from the moment we laid eyes on it, exuding character and charm in abundance.”
Lying within the secluded hamlet of Trelion, overlooking the upper reaches of the magnificent Fal Valley, the setting of The Stack is magical... the undulating countryside is nothing short of a Tolkien landscape. We relish waking up each day to birdsong, spending a relaxing end of day in the hot tub and stargazing with the children from the attic bedroom.
As a family with children aged from ten to 21, we've found that for each of us the Stack holds a different appeal; from the younger ones getting back-to-nature, to us toasting the end of another day with friends, enjoying the ambience created by playing music on every floor and indeed, outside on the decking: perfect for those al fresco evenings. Likewise, we have friends who come to stay when we're away who enjoy having the house entirely to themselves.
The previous owners were musicians and from song-writing to novel creation, we feel that the very special ambience that this Cornish Stack House possesses is conducive to getting those creative juices flowing! We hope you find this a property for all seasons, from the cosy basement cinema room to flinging open the back door and reclining on the deck.

The Stack is in an idyllic location and beautifully presented. The outdoor areas and garden in particular were very well maintained and contributed significantly to our enjoyment of our time at The Stack. The elevated decking area, wide kitchen door and outdoor seating (very hot weather during our stay) and proximity to the kitchen made it a very convenient and picturesque amenity. The upstairs bedroom - four-storey loft/Velux windows - was a great feature - lots of stargazing and owls!
What an amazing property with stunning views of the countryside. Our plan was to explore Cornwall but the view from the house, and the amazing gardens, meant that we spent most afternoons with a glass of wine in hand watching the wildlife busy about us.
My family and I had a wonderful return visit to The Stack. I highly recommend this property to anybody who needs some peace and complete chill-out time. We are now looking to stay in another property of yours and hoping to book as soon as we can! Thank you!
This house is unique and so beautiful! Thank you for a wonderful and relaxing stay here. We had many adventures touring the north and south coast. Doug, the dog, especially enjoyed making friends with the cows! The housekeeper was very helpful and made our stay very special. Thank you.
What a lovely setting, we spotted some amazing wildlife. The weather was great; sunshine every day and it was lovely to end the day in the hot tub under the stars. Thank you to the housekeeper for all your help!
What a lovely and unique place to stay in Cornwall. Photographing for a story in Modern Rustic Magazine. We felt like we were on holiday and the house was beautiful. Thank you for having us.
An amazing place to spend our mini-moon. So lucky with the weather, mostly stunning sunshine and lovely walks. Had a great night on New Years Eve with the wood pizza oven. Thank you.
A beautiful place to stay to celebrate a fiftieth birthday. We have had some amazing weather from frosty mornings to sunshine and starry sky´s at night, best seen from the hot tub with a glass of bubbly! Thank you.
What an absolutely delightful place to stay. It felt like our very own castle with views on all sides. The decoration and furnishing are unique and tasteful with some lovely touches. The hot tub was enjoyed by all. A very enjoyable stay, we would love to come back.
The Stack is simply magical, from the moment you open the gate at the top of the drive, right up to the cosy star gazing bedroom. Weather has been miserable but has mean´t we have indulged in lots of fires and time on the sofa pouring over books. We would recommend staying here to everyone and will certainly be back. Thank you for creating such a lovely home.
We have had the most fabulous week here at The Stack. The house is just stunning and the views are unbelievable. Our week here has gone far too quickly, we could quite happily stay forever. We will most certainly return. Thank you.
The Stack just blew me away. From the long path leading down to the imposing building, to the warmth of the rustic kitchen and thought behind each of the quirky bedrooms, it was like opening the door into Narnia - totally out of this world. We loved relaxing on the deck and spending evenings in the hot tub with the music on in the background. Thank you so much for creating such a special place we will remember for years to come.
