It's a place where the comforts of thoughtful design beckon guests to immerse themselves in nature's grand spectacle amid sophisticated surroundings. The pitched roof cuts a striking silhouette against the undulating hills, while inside, a cocoon of warmth awaits. It's a retreat for those who appreciate luxury but yearn to escape the everyday in the grounding touch of the great outdoors. Here, simple pleasures take centre stage—foraging for blackberries in the hedgerows, sipping wine under the stars, and basking in the views.
Inside
Far from rustic, the cabin exudes the elegance of the 6th arrondissement in the heart of the Welsh wilderness. Exposed beams trace the ceiling, their robust linearity softened by oak parquet below. Charcoal sketches adorn white walls, a monochrome palette allowing the landscape to shine through glass doors. In the kitchen, a clever partition maintains flow of space and conversation, while oatmeal tones create a calm backdrop, enhanced by architectural lighting and a crackling log burner. A standalone bathtub in the bedroom offers soaks with scenic views, while the four-poster promises restful nights.
Outside
Step onto the wraparound deck, and the cabin reveals its raison d'être. The Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons unfold before you, while prim topiaries contrast with bee-friendly blooms. A wolf sculpture peeps from the foliage, nodding to the land's mythic past; explore three acres of meadows that meld into common land beyond. “The Black Cabin is more than just a retreat; it´s a testament to Hay-on-Wye´s literary charm, the Black Mountains´ majesty, and the magic of rural Welsh life. We´ve crafted a haven where creativity flows as freely as the mountain air, blending the area´s artistic heritage with tranquil comfort and inspiring views.”
I was drawn to Hay-on-Wye's natural beauty and creative spirit. After living in vibrant cities like London, Paris, and Manchester, I began to long for the stillness of nature.
I discovered this beautiful land during the Hay Literary Festival in March 2012. Driving up a narrow, high-verged lane, we were awestruck as we turned through the gate. The Black Mountains rose before us like a magnificent 1950s’ film backdrop.
I designed and built the cabin in 2015 and have more recently remodelled it ready to welcome whoever is drawn to this wonderful landscape.
The moorland behind the cabin is truly special. In certain light, the hills resemble sleeping prehistoric creatures. This expansive landscape invites you to slow down, breathe deeply and walk with a sense of wonder.
Hay-on-Wye itself is a treasure trove of creativity, with writers and artists populating nearby farms. This artistic influence is evident in the town's charming shops and galleries.
