Tempest
Whitsand Bay, Cornwall, UK
In Cornwall's iconic Whitsand Bay, Tempest is a luxury beach house with warm interiors, a great big hot tub terrace, and the sea-and-sky views that this "forgotten corner" is known for. Come here to fall asleep to the sound of the waves, try sea swimming under the constellations, or while away an entire afternoon on the deck, sipping tea and going back for seconds of Cornish heavy cake. It's the kind of chic shack that casts a salty spell on those who stay.
Introduction
A Whitsand Bay wonder that could rival any pad in the Bahamas, Tempest boasts huge windows and a hot tub that appears to hang over an unspoiled beach. One of the largest homes on Tregonhawke Cliff, it's the ideal coastal retreat for family gatherings, with paradisiacal surrounds that truly offer something for everyone. With unfettered access to the sand and sea of the Rame Peninsula, one of Cornwall's wildest stretches, a stay here will ignite modern-day nostalgia; fish and chips on the harbour wall, throwing sticks into the surf, and sunset suppers of barbecued oysters and zesty Albariño.
Inside
Come inside and let all thoughts of ordinary life sail away. Industrial interiors are softened by a palette of chalks and charcoals, with playful pops of colour here and there, while floor-to-ceiling windows frame a moving seascape. The open-plan living areas of this luxury beach house support a stylish sort of coastal rejuvenation; push open the sliding doors and let the sea air work its magic, sipping from a pot of mint tea on the indigo armchair, or squeezing market stall oranges into a pitcher for the breakfast table. At Tempest, family meals will be forever changed; think open-air eats with Stan Getz on the sound speaker.
Outside
Wherever you choose to sit within the tiered gardens at Tempest, the call of the birds and the hypnotic ebb and flow of the tide offer nature's soothing soundtrack. Down on the beach, lay out soft towels and poke a vintage parasol into the sand, opting for slow living by the sea. Or leverage the thrill of the coastline, trying coasteering, snorkelling, surfing, or paddleboard yoga. Back at Tempest, someone will be warming up the barbecue for another glorious evening of charred local fare; so, slide on sandals and nip to the nearest store for supplies of good wine, posh crisps, and avocado for the guacamole.

From the owner
“Every day is different at Tempest; the ever changing sea views never fail to stir a different emotion. I love to lay in the bath looking out over the ocean, particularly on a stormy night. My family most enjoy the spectacular sunsets whilst I love to watch the moonlight on the water.”
I first purchased Tempest in 1982 at the age of 22, when it was a simple and rustic beach chalet. I was the only inhabitant at the time, sleeping with my window wide open at night!
It has since seen many changes, from losing the roof in the 1989 storms when it had lots of tiny little rooms, to creating the upstairs to its present day open-planned glory. That's simplifying the story. In a nutshell, a partner, three sons and 33 years later, it's taken several different changes and renovations to make this what we feel a comfortable beach home.
When I came here at the age of 22 to "have a look", I sat still, listened to the waves and breathed. That was it! I've been hooked ever since. So beware, when you're staying at Tempest it is hard to do anything but relax. You are trapped by the Whitsand Bay spell.

A much needed and much enjoyed escape to this wild bit of coast. We have seen all weathers but got our dip in the sea on one of the calmer days - a balmy 10C! We´ve loved the view, the fire, the flowers and most of all the sounds of the sea and wind. We are truly restored.
We got engaged here! This place will always be in our memories and in our hearts. The perfect weekend and we couldn´t have asked for a more perfect place. The weather was amazing, sunshine all day and those views to enjoy. Thank you for making this weekend as memorable as possible.
Thank you to the owner for such a lovely stay at your beautiful home. This is our second time back at Tempest, and it hasn´t disappointed. Great weather and a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the gorgeous views all over again.
With a few days to go, I booked a last minute trip and can´t believe how fortunate we were to have discovered this incredible place! The views on arriving at Tempest here are breathtaking, making it a truly enchanting home. Being here has given us a much needed chance to relax and appreciate the peace and beauty of the property and its surroundings. The owner has created a wonderful home, warm and welcoming with so many thoughtful touches. A very special place with memories we will never forget.
Such a beautiful home! We have had the most perfect stay and relaxation levels have reached a new high. This is our first trip to Cornwall and we have fallen in love with the area and your home. We have been surfing, hiking and enjoying the beautiful weather, including evening and sunset dinners on the deck, which have been magical. The level of detail hasn´t gone unnoticed, and thank you for making us feel so welcome.
Thank you so much for everything! From the warm welcome hamper to your prompt responses to the much-needed adapters. It was all amazing! We loved our stay and hope to return to this beautiful part of the world sometime in the future. Enjoy the season and thanks again.
The perfect holiday home, we have particularly, enjoyed watching the surfers and the birds swooping and diving into the sea. Walking down to the beach and enjoying the beautiful views. One evening we spotted a cruise ship, MS Rotterdam making its way across the bay and out to sea. We discovered it had departed from Plymouth and was on its way to New York. The binoculars come in very handy to get a close-up view. The hot tub was used every evening, it was a luxury that enhanced our stay. Thank you, it has been a great relaxing holiday.
What a magical place! We have been in a lot of great places but yours is a very special one. Not only is the view absolutely stunning but the house itself is a real jewel and we have enjoyed every moment of it! We will return home with a lot of wonderful memories and maybe one day we will return to this unique place of yours!
Dreams do come true! Thank you for providing us with the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful property with amazing views. We are happy to have made lots of family memories here!
As two couples who are lifelong friends and travelling companions, this holiday came at the perfect time after isolation over the last couple of years. This beautiful home provided us with everything we needed and more; the view simply took our breath away every time. The house is comfortable, warm and inviting and a special thank you for the fresh flowers everywhere. To top it all off we had glorious weather all week, which meant wonderful walks on the beach together. We just can´t wait to return!
We rarely return to places, but Tempest called us back and boy, we were delighted to be here for every reason. A wonderful week in the most superb surroundings. Thank you for the special little touches and simply all the magic in your home. Another dose of the best medicine by the sea. Heaven!
What an amazing few days we´ve had. We couldn´t have found a more perfect spot for our first holiday as a family. The dog and baby both had a wonderful time! The house is cosy and that view! Thank you for your hospitality, a truly wonderful stay. We even saw a pod of dolphins!
What an amazing trip! The whole family were thrilled as soon as we walked through the front door of Tempest. The walks on the beach and relaxing nights in the hot tub made this stay all the more enjoyable. We really didn´t want to leave, so thank you.
What a lovely place to stay! We really enjoyed walking on the beach and admiring the views. We very much hope to visit again, also, the hot tub was amazing! Thank you so much for sharing Tempest with us!
What a magical place to stay! Thank you for making our first holiday as a family of three as relaxing as it can be. The house is the perfect little escape for us and we have fallen in love with the view. After a challenging two years of lockdown, pregnancy and maternity leave, this little break was just what we needed. Especially watching shooting stars from the hot tub. We´re going home with wonderful memories, thank you!
We can only echo the comments of the guests that have all stayed before us. What a fabulous property, an absolute gem! We have had a wonderful few days exploring the area and just relaxing as much as possible. We will definitely be back!
We love Tempest! What a location for our honeymoon, which was a year late no thanks to COVID, but was the best medicine after a tough couple of years. We truly felt at home and absolutely do not want to leave, but guess it´s only fair to share this amazing place with someone else. Our dogs have also had the best time, often caught staring out to sea and enjoying the decking space in the sunshine. Whitsand Bay is a paradise and we hope to return very soon. Thank you for making the first few days of married life unforgettable!
Thanks for a wonderful weekend! It was absolutely idyllic. We couldn´t have asked for a better (would-have-been) honeymoon that was delayed by COVID restrictions. We loved all the thoughtful touches, and the hamper full of goodies was just what we needed. We could have looked out at this view forever and we feel lucky to have enjoyed it playing board games and enjoying a glass (or two) in the hot tub. We hope to visit again very soon!
We have loved every second here! We´ve been very lucky with amazing weather during our December stay. Such a beautiful beach house with amazing views and we´ve loved walking along the coastal paths taking in the sea air. It´s a very peaceful part of the world and Cornwall never disappoints in winter! Thank you so much for the welcome, the lovely hamper and a fantastic stay.
We´ve had an absolutely fantastic time at Tempest. The weather has thrown all sorts at us! When it´s sunny, the view is magical with breathtaking sunsets. During stormy times, it´s equally as amazing with some very angry skies! The house itself is a hidden gem and makes the perfect retreat for rest and relaxation. The added touches around the house, such as flowers everywhere you look, make it that extra bit special. We thoroughly loved it!
Tempest and its location are wonderfully dramatic. From the constantly changing coastline, to the wind that sang us to sleep every night, to the blazing sunsets in the west. In the midst of this drama, Tempest is a wonderful tranquil home beautifully decorated with countless touches of creativity, imagination and fresh themes to enjoy in every room; just so magical. Long walks along the coast path, watching the waves on the beach at low tide and the lovely hot tub have all made for a wonderful stay. Thank you for an incredible experience.
What a truly incredible piece of heaven! We loved absolutely everything at Tempest. It´s so clean, organised and exactly what we needed! We will definitely be back for another stay!
Thank you so much for allowing us to borrow this amazing place, it was the best place to break out of lockdown and introduce us to staying somewhere that wasn´t home. We loved the views, the treats, the team, the walks, the sunshine, the sound of the waves and the hot tub as the sun went down. Thank you again for all your help! We hope to visit again - and soon.
Wow! What an absolutely stunning house and the most amazing views. Just beautiful! The owner has been a star looking after us through the worst storm they´ve had in years! Can´t wait to come back again, and fingers crossed for the weather!
We have had a wonderful time at your amazing house! Thank you for the warm and lovely atmosphere, the fresh flowers, the delicious Cornish products, and the fabulous interior furnishings! We have enjoyed the beautiful view from your terrace and great walks along the coastal path. Many thanks for giving us the chance to stay at Tempest. It has made our holiday an unforgettable experience!
Thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous home with us. We loved every moment of our holiday and it was the perfect getaway from London! We especially enjoyed the hot tub and the kids adored playing on the beach! We can´t wait to come back very, very soon!
We´ve had the most wonderful time here at Tempest. When we arrived, the view was simply stunning and took our breath away. We couldn´t have wished for better weather! We had lovely morning walks along the beach and lazy afternoons on the sun loungers. Perfect!
