Book

Introduction

The Isle of Skye, with its rugged mountain ranges and lochs, holds a folkloric magic that transcends time. Set within its wild beauty, Selkie is an eco-conscious sanctuary designed in harmony with the land, allowing the scenery to take center stage. Panoramic views stretch across heather-clad hills and Loch Harport below, while minimalist interiors create a refuge for rest. Powered by renewable energy from an integrated wind turbine and solar panels, and supplied with pure spring water, the house is designed to exist lightly within its setting. Days are spent exploring legendary landscapes, while evenings unfold over al fresco dinners – occasionally accompanied by the aurora pirouetting overhead.

Inside

Natural light floods the minimalist open-plan living space through floor-to-ceiling windows, shifting with the skies and seasons, while the walls are painted in pigments blended with locally sourced seaweed. A woodburner embraces the Scottish tradition of “coorie” – meaning to find comfort in simple pleasures. Oak floors and contemporary furnishings from Soho Home and Danish brand BoConcept add texture in a palette drawn from the landscape. Thoughtful details abound – like the owners’ own polar photography, cherished heirlooms, and handcrafted ceramics from local artisans. In the bedrooms, linen-draped beds invite slow mornings with a view.

Outside

Selkie is a gateway to Skye’s wild heart. From the main living space, sliding doors open onto a yoga deck, where golden eagles and kestrels soar overhead and otters may be spotted playing along the loch’s shore below. A luxury outdoor sauna offers panoramic views by day and a front-row seat to Skye’s famously starlit skies by night. For a fresh perspective, embark on a wildlife boat tour – just a short walk from the house – or explore the coastline by kayak. The vibrant community of Carbost (with a Talisker Distillery pitstop) offers a taste of island life, while adventurers can set out for wild swims at the Fairy Pools, wander Talisker Bay, or take on the jagged peaks of the Black Cuillin.
