The Signal Station
The Lizard, Cornwall, UK
Journey to the end of the earth to this iconic and historic maritime home settled high on the cliffs of Cornwall’s wild Lizard Peninsula. Once offering safe passage to voyaging ships, The Signal Station is the most southerly self-catering home in the land. Here, understated coastal charm perfectly complements the ever-changing horizon.
Introduction
Built in 1872 as a beacon of safety for passing vessels, this southernmost luxury home offers a unique self-catering coastal retreat on the Lizard Peninsula. Rise with the sun, spread yoga mats on the roof terrace and stretch into the morning before grabbing boots and beach towels ready to stomp the coast path to the turquoise waters of Kynance Cove. The Lizard Peninsula offers endless opportunities to amble between kitsch tearooms, quaint fishing villages and golden beaches, but with views as good as those from The Signal Station, you’d be forgiven for not wanting to leave.
Inside
Inside the Signal Station, white-washed walls, soft blues and greys flawlessly blend with the kaleidoscopic horizon, while industrial fittings and salvaged features nod to this unique home’s seafaring past. Spanning three floors, from the light-filled living spaces to the carefully curated bedrooms on the first floor, and the bar with direct roof terrace access at the top of the house, you can be assured of mesmeric views from this immersive property. With window seats as perfect for a quiet, contemplative morning cup of tea as stormwatching, this is a truly elemental escape.
Outside
Here is a place where barefooted al fresco breakfasts are mandatory, where the stars shine bright and the sea forever whispers, where the enormity of nature awes, envelops and frees in equal measure. Sun-kissed, windswept days can be expected with any stay at The Signal Station, where both storms and postcard-worthy days are as breathtaking as each other. Barbecue overlooking the ocean, or recline on the roof terrace - sipping cocktails created in the crow's nest home bar - and watch silhouetted birds (perhaps a rare chough) soar on thermals as the heavens burn at the close of the day.

From the owner
“It is rare to find a property with 270 degree views of uninterrupted dramatic coastline and a far reaching horizon. Whether stargazing, sunset chasing or storm watching, prepare to fall deeply in love with its charm!”
The Signal Station has stood here since 1872, playing an integral part in our maritime history. As a listed building, we could make no changes to the exterior but were able to undergo a full interior refurbishment when we took over a long-term lease in May 2018 from The National Trust.
Whilst we were obviously blown away by the stunning views, the inside needed to be looked at with an open mind as it was previously very uninspiring indeed, feeling cold and unloved. We left no stone un-turned and went about a transformative renovation, bringing it back to its former glory.
'Hygge' is what we have tried to create at the Signal Station. There are no bright spotlights in the ceilings to make rooms feel cold and office like, and instead there are lots of places to sit and relax with cushions and blankets, even window seats to watch the ever changing coastal views.
It's almost hard to imagine its former days as a signal station, where the signal men worked up to 48 hours on a shift, with no electricity or heating for the first 50 years of its operation. This is the first time ever in its history that it's been available to the public to stay in and we feel very privileged to be able to able share this incredible place with you.

A beautiful building with jaw dropping views. Everything was in perfect condition, and beautifully done. Already planning a return trip. Such a uniquely beautiful place. Having breakfast sitting in the window surrounded by sea, and stepping out on to the wild coastal path was a dream.
What a fantastic time we had! We arrived with golden sunshine, which lasted for most of our stay. We went on hikes along the beautiful coast, swam in the sea, dreamed on the lovely bench just outside and tasted some of the best Cornish food. Thank you so much for the truly wonderful relaxation we had because of the cosy and welcoming house. We surely will keep this warm memory with a smile.
Thank you very much for letting us share your beautiful house which we enjoyed equally in good and bad weather. We will always remember it as the setting of a great family holiday and could not imagine a more suited place to hear the sad news of the passing by of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
What a wonderful place, so beautifully designed with all the things you need for a spoilt stay. We arrived in storms which continued for the duration of our stay with the exception of one morning. But we loved watching the clouds roll in and the waves crashing, while we sipped tea and later bubbles in the warm. We very much hope to return for another winter break.
Stunning location, stylishly furnished house and a truly unique property. Beautifully refurbished whilst maintaining a real sense of its past history. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here.
We´ve already booked a return stay for next year, we love the place! Counting down the days until we can return and create more special memories at The Signal Station. Thank you, again.
I saw the Signal Station on George Clark´s Remarkable Renovations and loved the quirkiness of it. It fully lived up to the expectation. Thank you for a fantastic stay, we had the best time!
I just wanted to share that we had such a lovely time at The Signal Station. You´ve given it a wonderful atmosphere and made it feel so homely. It felt so peaceful; as if we were completely away from the rest of the world. Just what we needed.
The Signal Station is a lovely property in a beautiful location and very nicely presented. We used a private chef one night who was recommended on your website, he was absolutely fantastic.
This historic house feels very private, yet very comfortable and right on the sea with great sea-views and excellent walking on the South West coastal path, just outside. It is an outstanding property. We went last year, this year and we will be booking again!

The house is very tastefully decorated and well-equipped with everything we could have needed for our stay. The location is absolutely fantastic - the house is a very special place and we absolutely loved it. We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend it! The views (and sunsets) are absolutely incredible!
The Signal Station is an exceptional property - truly unique! We had a very memorable and enjoyable holiday - beautiful views from every window of the house and stunning secluded coves to walk to straight from the front door onto the coast path. A very helpful and informative house manual gave us great recommendations for local places to eat. Highly recommended!
Many thanks for making the house so beautiful, welcoming, and having created it to such a high standard. We absolutely loved it,and being here at this time of year made it even more dramatic and remarkable. The Signal Station was very comfortable and child friendly. The area is spectacular and we had some amazing walks around Lizard Point. We will definitely be back!
Thank you for a fantastic stay at The Signal Station. We had such a wonderful time and loved the area. We walked the coast path to Kynance Cove, enjoyed boat trips from Falmouth, dined in Porthleven and the children loved The Seal Sanctuary at Gweek. There´s nothing quite like waking to the sound of the sea and enjoying breakfast with the most amazing view. Thank you for a memorable week.
The Signal Station is such an iconic building, driving down the lane and reaching the far end of the lizard was just incredible, the views are beautiful and so inspiring – it’s one of a kind and a brilliant base to explore West Cornwall.
