The Aviary
Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, The Cotswolds, UK
Take one sprawling 17th century farmhouse, throw in some head-turning modern flourishes, a 15-metre heated outdoor pool and a garden full of roses, and the result is one fine self-catering retreat. Set just outside the thriving market town of Moreton-in-Marsh, with roaring fires and roll tops aplenty, the allure of a luxury Cotswolds break has never been so persuasive.
Introduction
Traditional Cotswold stone provides the golden foundations for some striking modern features at this former farm turned luxury retreat near Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire. Contemporary yet classic, The Aviary shows how the tender renovation of an historic home can present the best of old and new. Attractive timber beams hang high and proud above floor-to-ceiling windows, while the inviting sound of crackling fires call from living room after living room.
Inside
Filled with contemporary flair, from the sky-high wooden beams to the patterned rugs underfoot, this Cotswolds home is a haven of good taste. There's plenty to keep children of all ages amused, from bicycle hire to horse riding, leaving grandparents the perfect opportunity to steal some quiet time with a paperback in one of the decadent slipper baths. On thundery afternoons, spend family time together around the glass log burner in the living area, before retreating to the emerald green cocktail room to sip homespun concoctions around a pack of cards into the small hours.
Outside
In the garden, wildflowers sway in the gentle summer breeze and colourful camelias climb to the sky. From above, finches sing and jackdaws admire the lustre of the glistening copper pool. Children can tussle through the trees and rose bushes to discover the playing fields awaiting their arrival in summer, whilst the heated swimming pool, whirling hot tub and sunken fire pit area tempts grown-ups for midnight dips beneath the silver light of the moon.

From the owner
“Having my morning coffee in the drawing room, with its thick stone walls and big open fire, is a great way to start a peaceful winter morning. When the sun is shining and we have the sliding kitchen doors open, it really does show the meaning of bringing the outdoors in!”
This is a really special place for us as a family to retreat to when some time in the country is required, and we just love the way the inside and outside seamlessly merge, giving one the forever feeling that they are connected to nature.
The house really comes to life when the doors of the kitchen can be flung open and the sounds of birds chirruping overhead can be heard while brewing that first morning cup of coffee. That being said, there is something quite magical about The Aviary when storms are raging outside and you are sat with a large glass of red next to one of the many roaring open fires.
The covered well in the kitchen is a rather unusual feature, and one which makes our Cotswold home so unique. You can watch the water rise and fall with the weather; children just love to sit around it when it is raining!
