Book

Introduction

Designers Dave Coote and Atlanta Bartlett have created a unique cabin retreat near Rye and the Kent coast, a secret escape which welcomes guests to fall into step with the gentle tempo of Romney Marsh. Epitomising relaxation, there's a laid-back feel to the design scheme; think winter nights curled by the woodburner and lazy summer mornings breakfasting in the cottage garden. Whether on a solo retreat or honeymoon, guests will feel far-removed from the everyday at this luxury self-catering hideaway. Originally designed for writing and painting, the surrounding landscape brims with inspiration, from the Kentish coastline to the historic towns of Rye and Folkestone.

Inside

An uplifting couples retreat that embraces its whimsical setting with vigour, vintage fabrics and carefully curated antiques form the basis of Romany's interior scheme. The open-plan living space, with its painted shiplap walls traditional to Kent, exudes a distinctly New England coastal charm and features a woodburner to unwind by on cooler evenings. The cabin's bedroom features a striking chandelier and clawfoot bath that together radiate inimitable vintage glamour. Complete with an orangery summer room, guests can idle many an hour away on the daybed before enjoying a languid sunset supper. It’s no surprise this cabin has featured in numerous magazines and books.

Outside

A white picket fence, a fragrant herb garden, and a secluded hot tub; Romany’s outdoor space offers a taste of The Good Life. Outside the Romany bubble, explore Blue Flag beaches of the nearby Kent coast, including Camber Sands and Winchelsea Beach. Award-winning farm and winery, Tillingham, is just a short jaunt away, offering natural wines and a Michelin Green Star menu brimming with seasonal produce. Just a 10-minute drive will take you to the ancient town of Rye – a labyrinth of cobbled lanes, cosy pubs, and independent homeware shops. From art and jazz festivals to Rye’s beloved scallop celebration, there’s always something to toast during your stay.

From the owner

“The cabin is perfectly situated for you to enjoy the stunning countryside and the gorgeous Romney Marsh - also known as the Fifth Continent - with its wide open vistas, special micro climate and proximity to miles of beautiful coastline filled with wildlife and beaches.”

From the owner

We have lived on Romney Marsh for 15 years and totally adore it. At times it is like an onslaught to your senses with fragrant smells of rape fields in the spring, wheat in the summer and the rich marshy earth in the winter. In the summer we wake every day to the sound of birdsong, the roar of the poplar trees and the extraordinary 'chorus' of the marsh frogs.

Romney Marsh is a nature lovers paradise; bats, foxes, badgers, mink, stoats, water voles, hares, field mice and moles are all welcome residents here while birdwatchers flock from all over the world to catch a sight of the amazing and rare array of birdlife from marsh harriers, kestrels, nightingales, cuckoos, herons, cormorants, woodpeckers, and barn owls.

Rare sightings include honey buzzards, European serins and purple herons. Romney Marsh is also home to the much protected great crested newt and many endangered insects... and we have it all in our back garden!

This is a land of smugglers, shipwrecks (the local pub was once a smugglers inn), long walks, cycling, birdwatching, beaches, windsurfing, fishing (you can catch mackerel off the beach at Dungeness) and all only an hour and a half from London.

We´ve had an amazing time staying at Romany. The peace and quiet is just what we´ve needed. It´s a great retreat. We will be back.

A lovely few days spent here in your cabin exploring this part of Kent/East Sussex. Wonderfully relaxing, and fabulously quiet and so many great gardens to visit. A great way to spend a few days. Thank you.

Thank you so much for a lovely stay of cabin. We have a 2-month-old and a cockapoo and it was the perfect place for our little family! We loved the secluded location and the shabby chic feel of the place, with the added touch of luxury throughout like the hot tub and very comfortable bed and beautiful furnishings! We will definitely be recommending and returning!

A lovely, comfortable house in a lovely peaceful setting. Just right to unwind. Go to the Little Rock on the beach in Folkestone for a lovely lunch. And go to the farm shop, it´s wonderful!

Great spot to unwind and explore this part of the world. Had a lovely meal at the Woolpack, and Rye is always a place to enjoy. Certainly worth a visit. Thank you for having us!

What a lovely place! We decided that, by chance, we came on the best week of the year to enjoy it all. The fresh green of the grass, frothy hedge parsley, and the cuckoo every morning. It was really special. PS. Webbe’s Fish Café in Rye is excellent!

A beautiful cabin, comfortable and relaxing. Lovely places to visit nearby - Rye, Hastings, Hythe. Great pub food nearby. Had a lovely few days, thank you again for such a wonderful stay.

Beautiful shabby chic property in a lovely, peaceful, private setting. Well equipped and comfortable. Excellent blackout blinds. Ideal location for cycling, walking and good food/vineyards.

The garden, setting and home looked so peaceful and the high aesthetic & design was also obvious. The gardens were fantastic and the hot tub well placed. Perfect facilities for a relaxing, self-sufficient and enjoyable stay.

Lovely location and views. Enjoyed the secluded nature of the property. The design and style was very relaxing and welcoming. The bedroom was lovely, very comfy bed and a great bath. The outdoor hot tub was a welcome addition. Overall we really liked the property.

The location was great. Close to many places we wanted to see and yet it felt very remote and so peaceful. Great to ‘come home’ to. Birdsong is the only thing you hear. Beautiful big sky and great walks.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay and have also found inspiration from your exquisite interior design! We are sad to leave but do so with warm and happy hearts.

Thank you so much for making the cottage so welcoming. It felt lovely to be so secluded, yet so cosy indoors. It is the ideal spot to explore Rye add the surrounding areas. We are returning home after a peaceful and relaxing weekend.

We had a lovely short break, exploring Rye and Dungeness and the beaches of the marshes. The cabin is a delight and an ideal location for an early autumn retreat. Thank you very much.
