The Fable
Ventongimps, Perranporth, Cornwall, UK
Deep within pastoral Poldark country, at the end of a winding lane, sits a luxury thatched cottage, just a few miles from Perranporth Beach on the North Cornwall coast. From the ambrosial rose gardens to the hot tub nestled beneath glowing festoon lights, The Fable is a nostalgic fairy-tale home with a blush pink door and wonky windows. With its fair share of magazine features, it's an editorial dreamhouse within the rural hamlet of Ventongimps.
Introduction
Think signature scents meeting you at the front door, fluffy bathrobes dedicated to the moonlit dash to the hot tub, and blankets beckoning you to take midday naps on powder puff sofas. If it's English thatch appeal that you crave, The Fable has it in abundance. This pink-and-white cob cottage near Perranporth might be known for its similarity to the home from The Holiday, but it's more than a midwinter warmer; during spring and summer, it bursts with the heady fragrance of roses, whilst those illustrious autumn afternoons are spent with cherry pie and clotted cream around the heirloom table.
Inside
Think of The Fable as a luxe coastal basecamp with a touch of laid-back SoCal cool. This crooked cob cottage, painted in the dusky pink of a midsummer night’s sky and topped with a wheat thatched roof, hides bright rooms full of character behind its deep white walls. Within the Grade ll-listed cottage there's plump sofas, a greenery-filled sun room, a clawfoot tub, and fine linens that ensure comfort when rain lashes the windows. Foodies can unite in the rustic farmhouse kitchen, chatting over an abundance of local produce; sipping tea and passing plates of Cornish fairings and lumps of hevva cake.
Outside
Close to the golden sands and tidal pools of the North Cornwall coast, The Fable is a home for all seasons. From blooming roses to berry-laden holly bushes, it's the place to be to feel at one with nature. There's a summerhouse, a fragrant cottage garden, and a hot tub that basks under gold skies on summer evenings. Fighting the inclination to stay at home, there's all sorts of opportunities for good-time adventures further afield, like the sweeping sands of Holywell Bay and Perranporth Beach, named one of the best in the UK, and sprinkled with waterfront grills, seaside bakeries, and cocktail-ready beach bars.

From the owner
“Taking a holiday here is like stepping into another world. I love that you feel entirely removed from ´real life´ yet The Fable is just a short distance from the beach; it´s the best of both worlds for me.”
This Grade-II listed cottage was originally built in the 1700s and is believed to be one of the oldest properties in the parish of Perranzabuloe. It started life as part of a dairy farm; the crooked beams, cob walls and quirky layout make up the original infrastructure and are definitely a part of its unique charm.
I acquired The Fable from a retired couple at the beginning of summer 2015. I so enjoyed transforming the inside space and worked closely with local craftsmen and designers to complete the look and feel that you see today. Sourcing vintage shop finds that resonated with the character of the cottage was important to me. Nearly a decade later, the cottage was the centre of a collaboration with British heritage brand The White Company.
These days, I love relaxing here with family and enjoying the simple pleasures. We like to get out and about on foot as much as possible, and would encourage you to do the same; the footpath leads directly from the front door!

The Fable was such a dream, we loved our time and stay here. We come from California and have been so delighted by the area and people. We have a few friends that live locally and we cooked them food, many hours were spent singing and playing the guitar by the fire, baking pasties, and lounging in the hot tub. We could not have had a better time, everything was so well put together so many thanks. Such a wonderful place, in a wonderful part of the world.
What an absolute dream of a property, we would quite happily have spent the entire week hibernating here. Shame we were in a part of the country we´d never visited before and felt we should at least venture out a couple of times to explore! We just loved every single second of our stay and our children haven´t stopped talking about it since, nor have we in all honesty. The property is beyond divine. Super clean, a great location and with all the facilities you can dream of. We wouldn´t have changed a single thing.
After getting married in London we drove down to The Fable for our honeymoon, and what a glorious week we have had! Gleaming sunshine all week, watching the sunset at Wheal Coates and walking to Callestick for some ice cream. We have loved the peace and serenity, and it´s been so nice to hear nothing but birds and the gentle bubble of the hot tub! We can´t wait to stay here again in the future.
After a long lockdown and months of being at home, we arrived on a quiet Sunday to this beautiful cottage bursting with summer roses and sunshine. The children gasped "it´s a fairy tale cottage!" and it most certainly is. We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay with nature trails and beaches all within easy reach. The cottage is so cosy and clean, thank you for a wonderful stay.
So sad to have reached our last day of the most special and amazing holiday. It has been just the most restorative stay made possible by being so comfortable and cosy in this beautiful cottage with the very best of friends. We have enjoyed wonderful walks on the beaches, but never happier than when snuggling up by the fire under the fairy lights. Thank you for sharing this wonderful home, we very much hope to return very soon.
A stunning, peaceful cottage and beautiful decor with all the conveniences. We waw out Storm Dennis by the log fire, and the conservatory was a wonderful yoga space replacing walks. We ventured to Holywell Bay and Crantock Beach; the best I have ever seen in all my travels around the world! Watching surfers in the storm was fantastic. Thank you for a wonderful stay, and the housekeeping was immaculate.
An absolutely stunning cottage, the fabrics & furnishings are so luxurious and comfortable. It´s very easy to unwind here and so quiet and peaceful. We have never seen the dogs so relaxed! We would love to come back one day.
What an absolutely heavenly week! The weather fairies were definitely smiling on us all week and we had glorious winter sunshine and enjoyed long walks with the pup and twinkly Christmas festivities. We explored a lot of the stunning beaches and highly recommend Perranporth, Watergate Bay and the wonderful Padstow. Apart from that, we just wanted to snuggle down in the house! We want to live here forever. The owner has impeccable taste. Looking forward to discovering the rest of your magical properties!
We have enjoyed our stay at this beautiful country hideaway. It rained nearly every day but the comforts of this quaint cottage still made for an enjoyable break. We will definitely be returning. Thanks for a wonderful stay! P.s. love the décor!
Wow, wow, wow! The Fable was so much more than we expected with every detail thought of. The cottage is so cosy and inviting and we relaxed so much, it was very hard to leave. The décor of the cottage is stunning and we will definitely be coming back as well as recommending to others!
Thank you for the most restorative stay at this most gorgeous of cottages. We feasted like kings, slept like babies and at the dog´s request, explored miles and miles of beautiful beaches and countryside. This has been our first trip to Cornwall and will definitely not be our last. There is so much to see and do here, we´ve hardly scratched the surface. This has been an ideal spot to head off on a different adventure every day. We hope to be back in the not too distant future.
Thank you for a most magical stay in your beautiful cottage. We were looking for a relaxing break in the winter sun and found ourselves here. What a great decision. It´s been the perfect holiday, cold and sunny beach walks, tasty beer, fabulous food and a cosy romantic fire to come back to. We will certainly be back. Thank you again!

What a beautiful cottage, we have had a great week even though the weather was not. The dogs have loved the walks along the beach at Perranporth. Thank you for making this great place so perfect.
Gorgeous, cosy cottage with lovely design features and a beautiful garden. The time has flown past and we have relaxed and have forgotten all about our busy lives. Thanks again Cornwall and Unique Homestays and the Sonos music system is great.

Had a wonderful week´s break with generally lovely sunny weather. Everyday spent walking, loved Holywell Beach, Chapel Porth walk and delicious onion soup at Chapel Porth cafe. A lovely cosy cottage, a welcome sanctuary after long days out.
Beautiful hideaway with an amazing interior. The Fable has made our first holiday in Cornwall an unforgettable one. The cottage is very well equipped. Our kids loved the Sonos sound system and our dogs Beany and Amy loved exploring the garden. We´ve had such a great time here and have enjoyed spending everyday on the beach. Would love to come back as soon as possible.
What a fantastic place to stay. A perfect winter retreat; everything from the cosy sitting rooms and fire, to the snug bedrooms and winter walks. Our two small children loved the beaches and coastal walks. We would love to come back one day! Thank you.
The photos do not do The Fable justice! We thought we were staying in a smaller space, but once inside there is lots more room to relax in. It´s beautifully furnished throughout and every corner is filled with interesting pieces. The kitchen is the real heart of the home where we enjoyed fantastic suppers. The living area was perfect for snuggling up by the fire afterwards. Thank you, we had such a brilliant holiday in this magical fairy-tale cottage!
