Castle on the Well
South Molton, Exmoor, Devon, UK
Resting on prehistoric Druid stones and built on the site of a 6th century chantry, this unique luxury castle-like dwelling on the edge of Exmoor is sure to enchant from first sight. Combining crenellated walls with mullioned windows, a breathtaking copper dome room and over an acre of blooming gardens, Castle on the Well feels as though a fairytale dwelling has landed right here in the north Devon countryside.
Introduction
Fusing traditional shooting lodge charm with a modern country twist, Castle on the Well hides within a patchwork of pretty Devonshire countryside bordering Exmoor National Park. Once the site of a chapel said to have been built by St Petroc, this unique self-catering home has been sensitively restored to luxurious specifications and designed wholly to embrace its ancient roots. Inside, harmony ensues, and whether squirreled away in a reading nook or enjoying a raucous lunch with the family, treasured memories are guaranteed.
Inside
Lovingly restored to exude a homely, yet design-led interior, soothing greys and earthy tones sweep through this rare North Devon dwelling. A home where both introverts and extroverts can be equally at peace; large, airy spaces soon twist into quiet corners, too cosy to contemplate leaving. Stolen moments are at the heart of Castle on the Well, and there’s no better place to spend a little together time than on the curved sofas beneath the Turner-inspired Venetian plaster dome. Come dusk, the sleeping quarters comprise three double bedrooms that ensure luxury for the whole family.
Outside
The ramparts of this castle-in-miniature are sure to see children tear around the grounds with shouts of flaming dragons and brave princesses, meanwhile, grown-ups can enjoy the serenity that life in the South Molton hills can bring, with an ice-cold, local gin in hand for good measure. Wildlife lovers will be in their element here, and misty mornings will see rabbits and pheasants picking their way between the wildflowers, while the nearby North Devon coast will reward explorers with seals, dolphins and maybe even a lost mermaid or two.

From the owner
“Close to the coast but still secluded, Castle on the Well is a perfect spot both in the summer and to hunker down in the cooler months. It has become a firm favourite for family celebrations and our go-to place to come to press the reset button away from everyday life.”
Finding Castle on the Well was a purely chance occasion which has resulted in much hard work over the last few years to get it to where it is today. Meeting many incredible people along the way, it has become a very special retreat for our family.
The house's origins date back to the 6th century when the Welsh missionary St Petroc, who evangelised Devon and Cornwall, came to visit this site. According to folklore, St Petroc carried some of the Hoar Stones from Wrick down to St Petroc and piled them around the well. Many of them can be seen around St Petroc still, including the well cap stone in the domed living room.
During the reign of Henry VIII, the house was left to fall into ruin until a small cottage was built in 1825, then a larger house resembling what you see today built in 1924. By 2005 this unique property had become derelict once again.
We took ownership of Castle on the Well just a few years ago and it has not been without it’s challenges, however, has become a place we have come to love and spend time with our two young girls, family and friends.
