Quantum | Modern Luxury Self-Catering Home | Norwich, Norfolk

Quantum

Alderford, Norwich, Norfolk, UK

A barn conversion, but not as you know it; here is a place where sleek modernity replaces typical rustic charm. It's all poured concrete and porcelain at this luxury home near Norwich, where the sun beams in through glass and shimmers off pearlescent tiles. Agricultural on the outside, architectural within; float across the indoor pool, stargaze from bed, or practise your putting on the garden green. A new kind of Norfolk awaits.

Book

Introduction

Two summers spent living in a campervan to better understand the land: two years of design, and one of building, the owner of Quantum understood that superb architecture takes time and patience. He was raised in the nearby village of Attlebridge, with teenage years spent working the surrounding Norfolk farmlands. From seed to spectacle, grain store to grand silhouette, today this large, steel-framed barn is unassuming to the casual observer, where a facade of glass and corrugated iron hides the immense luxury living space within.

Inside

A metal drum reminiscent of a grain silo houses a spiral staircase at the entrance, offering a playful insight into Quantum's raw aesthetic before even opening the door. Simple materials have great impact here; a behemothic, concrete box encompassing the four bedrooms separates the open-plan living area and swimming pool, giving way to colossal height on either side, while an entire wall of windows ensures those big-blue Norfolk skies become as much of the interior design as the first-floor glass bridge.

Outside

Shade-hunter or pluviophile, Quantum's outdoor living area is sheltered by a deep overhang, meaning al fresco living is encouraged no matter the weather. Olive trees and palms are right at home here, harking to the family's holidays in the Med. At the back of this RIBA award-winning barn, the young at heart will be in their element, with two acres of paddock to run riot in, a golf green, football pitch and trampoline. Half an hour away, you'll find endless fun in the cobbled streets, crooked antiquaries and modish bars of Norwich.

From the owner

“Quantum is more than just a home; it´s a celebration of Norfolk´s vast skies, rich history, and the beauty of architectural transformation. I´ve created a space where every day feels like a holiday, blending the barn´s agricultural heritage with modern luxury and comfort.”

From the owner

As someone with deep roots in Norfolk, transforming the barn was a labour of love that connected my past with my present. I grew up in the nearby village of Attlebridge, where my father served as the Parish Priest and I was a choir boy. This personal history made the barn conversion not just a project, but a homecoming.

The journey from utilitarian grain store to family sanctuary took years of careful planning and execution. I aimed to preserve the barn's character while creating a contemporary living space that embraces its surroundings. The result is a home that offers views of the 14th-century church and the Norfolk landscape through strategically placed windows and the signature glass bridge.

My vision for Quantum was to create a space that prioritises lifestyle and family time. The indoor swimming pool with its pearlescent mosaic tiles, the cinema room, and the extensive gardens with a golf green and football pitch all contribute to a home that's both a retreat and a playground.

The central dining area, overlooking the pool and countryside, has become the heart of the home; a place for gathering and basking in the natural light from the large skylight above.
