Nestled within The Haven Coast on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, Schull is a peaceful village just a short hop from Cork Airport. Renowned for its beauty and often visited by a distinguished clientele, the town not only offers a stunning backdrop to any adventure, but also a range of quality eateries and inns to frequent at the end of a salt-licked day by the sea.
With all of this in mind, I was still unprepared for the tranquility that awaited me at Skyros. Driving through the small town until the sight of the sea was clear and far-reaching, we turned into the drive of our weekend home. With both views of the ocean and the architectural delight of Skyros to contend with attention, we were immediately torn with where to look first!
Skyros offers enough space-age feel to satisfy any sci-fi buff, an air of style and creativity to ignite the fires of any design guru and a level of comfort that ensures the ultimate in relaxation for all; the beds are indulgent, the location unparalleled and the light heavenly. The deep comfort of the lounge with its log burner, blankets and thick rugs offers a cosy hideaway as the ever-changing weather rolls from rain, to shine to storm across the bay.
After a night of deep sleep, we reluctantly left our dream-soft beds and walked down to Colla Pier where we enjoyed a coffee at the cute, tucked away café. We sat in the sunshine and watched the boats skim across the sea towards the secret beaches of The Calves to set down passengers for their picnic lunches and days of quiet solitude. Maybe tomorrow we will hire one of our own…
We carried on walking around the peninsula, a moderate stretch of 40 minutes, offering friendly greetings from locals and out-of-this-world sights in all directions. The afternoon was spent watching the boats from the comfort of Skyros’ private, sheltered lawn and enjoying some time away from technology; reading, relaxing and taking in that glorious fresh sea air. After a quick wash and brush up we strolled into Schull to choose our dinner spot for the evening and to make plans for tomorrow. Sailing, canoeing or exploring the historic hills bordering the town; the world is your oyster here at Skyros.
